Will Muschamp says South Carolina voted for ‘plus-1’ scheduling model but lost vote

The Clemson Tigers and South Carolina Gamecocks have met on the football field every year since 1909. However, that streak will come to an end in 2020.

That’s because the SEC voted for a 10-game, conference-only schedule in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, not allowing for nonconference contests.

On Wednesday, South Carolina coach Will Muschamp said the Gamecocks voted for a “plus-1” scheduling model, which would have allowed the rivalry to continue, but said the other schools outvoted those that wanted the “plus-1” model:

Florida-Florida State, Georgia-Georgia Tech and Kentucky-Louisville are the other 3 SEC-ACC rivalries that won’t be played this fall.

If the pandemic is under control by next season, it stands to reason that all of those rivalries would return. We’ll see.
