The No. 9 Kentucky Wildcats are out with a bye this weekend, resting up for what will be a pivotal road matchup against the No. 16 Tennessee Volunteers under the lights in Neyland Stadium in Week 10.

The Cats are currently riding a 5-game losing streak against the Vols, and this year’s matchup is likely to carry major conference title and College Football Playoff implications for both programs as the regular season enters its final stretch.

First-year Kentucky head coach Will Stein previewed the upcoming showdown on Rocky Top while speaking with reporters Wednesday, expressing deep respect for Josh Heupel and the rest of the Tennessee coaching staff while also calling the Vols “one of the elite teams in the country.”

“I think they’re obviously one of the elite teams in the country,” Stein said. “I think they’re good in all three phases. Coach Heupel has been one of the dynamic play callers in college football over the last decade or so. And then Jim Knowles, this will now be my fourth time going against Coach (Jim) Knowles. And I mean, I can’t say enough great things about him. He’s a phenomenal coordinator. His defense is very hard to game plan against. And I think he’s one of the best in the business. And then special teams are gonna affect that as well.So going into their stadium, I have nothing but respect for that coaching staff.”

Stein has already shown he can lead Kentucky to road wins in hostile environments this season, doing so on several different occasions, but a trip to Neyland Stadium presents a different kind of challenge.

The Wildcats haven’t won in Knoxville since 2020, and ending that drought next Saturday will require a near-flawless performance from Stein and his coaching staff against one of the SEC’s toughest opponents. If he can manage to pull it off, then he will given Kentucky an inside track to their first-ever CFP appearance.
