Will Stein explains decision to go for 2 against LSU with 4-word answer
Big Blue Nation, intentionally or not, fully embraced offensive aggression when Will Stein became the Kentucky Wildcats‘ head coach. Fortunately for fans, the hometown kid’s bite has backed his bark halfway through his debut campaign in Lexington.
Stein ordered up an overtime, game-winning two-point conversion at South Carolina in Week 5. He went back to the well in Week 6, replicating his feat on Kenny Minchey’s QB draw to produce an identical 35-34 result, this time vs. No. 10 LSU. Postgame, Stein succinctly chalked up his decision with four words:
“I play to win,” Stein told ESPN sideline reporter Taylor McGregor. “I don’t know what else to say.”
Stein has Kentucky (5-1, 3-1 SEC) tied for second place in the SEC with Alabama through six games of his coaching tenure. The Wildcats fell out of the top 25 after beating the Gamecocks, but are set to return to the AP poll following Saturday’s win.
ESPN’s Football Power Index gives Kentucky a 20.6% chance of reaching the College Football Playoff, good for 18th-best in the country. The Wildcats head to Norman for a battle with the Oklahoma Sooners, who just defeated No. 1 Texas, in Week 7. Kentucky and Oklahoma will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Oct. 17 (SEC Network).
