LSU softball fielded criticism after securing the 16th and final national seed last week. Now, after dominating the Baton Rouge Regional, the Tigers have advanced to the Super Regional round and will face No. 1 seed Alabama.
The Tigers beat Virginia Tech on Sunday 7-2 behind strong performances by Jalia Lassiter, Maci Bergeron and Ally Hutchins. Lassiter hit the Tigers’ lone home run on the evening, a solo shot to left field in the 3rd inning and finished with 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Bergeron and Hutchins added runs 2, 3 and 4 in the same frame and combined to tally 3 hits and 3 RBIs on the afternoon.
Despite Virginia Tech scoring the first 2 runs of the game, it was all LSU following Lassiter’s home run in the 3rd inning. Pitcher Peyton Monticelli recovered well after a slow start, finishing a complete game with 5 allowed hits (all of which came in the first 2 innings), 2 strikeouts and 1 earned run.
LSU outscored opponents 23-2 across 3 matchups this weekend. The Tigers beat Akron 8-0 on Day 1, then Virginia Tech on Day 2 before downing the Hokies once against on Sunday. 7-2.
