The Longhorns woke up on Monday needing 2 wins over one of the best teams in the country, and they did just that.
After forcing Game 2, the Texas Longhorns are heading to the Women’s College World Series Championship Series after downing Tennessee, 4-0. The Longhorns outscored Tennessee 9-2 across 2 matchups Monday.
For those keeping track, the Longhorns have now advanced to 3 straight Championship Series and 4 such trips across the past 5 seasons.
Texas ace Teagan Kavan was excellent in this one. Kavan was called in to slam the door shut on Tennessee in Game 1, then finished what she started in Game 2. She allowed just 2 hits with 10 strikeouts across 7 complete innings.
The Longhorns’ elite third innings all but sealed the deal early. Tennessee’s usually unfazed ace Karyln Pickens allowed 3 runs, including this RBI Double by Reese Atwood.
Katie Stewart tacked on another run in the 5th inning, a solo shot to center field that gave her the 30th home run of the season — adding to a Texas program record (previously 23).
The Longhors will face the winner of Alabama/Texas Tech, which is set to start at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. Like the Longhorns, Texas Tech will need 2 wins over the Crimson Tide to advance.
