Dylan Crews is gearing up for the MLB season after getting his feet wet with the Washington Nationals a season ago. Now looked at as a player who should break camp with the major league squad, the former LSU star is putting on a show with his glove and his bat during the spring.

On Tuesday, it was a diving grab by Crews that showed what he can bring to the table in the outfield. He ranged well into the left centerfield gap from his CF position to steal multiple bases away from Nolan Gorman with the St. Louis Cardinals.

During his first MLB action last season, Crews made 30 appearances in right field and just 4 in center field. A fellow SEC star and former Florida outfielder Jacob Young saw the majority of time in CF, so Crews is likely to see more time in RF, but he showed he has the ability and versatility to man the spot if needed.

While Crews did appear in 31 games during the 2024 season, his rookie status is intact entering the 2025 campaign. He also checks in at +350 in the NL Rookie of the Year odds at DraftKings, trailing only star Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki (+225) of the Los Angeles Dodgers. In a recent interview with AJ Pierzynski, Crews admitted he has a different mindset this spring. After getting his feet wet and adjusting to the big leagues, his mindset is in “full-go” mode for 2025.

“It’s good for me to almost prepare for something know that I’m going to be on a team and not wonder where I’m going to be at,” said Crews. “Last year was kind of an adjustment year, too, with my first spring training. This year’s the 2nd time around, so it’s full-go for me and the team. We’re not waiting for the future anymore. The future is now.”

The former College World Series star went No. 2 overall in the 2023 MLB Draft, giving the Tigers the top 2 picks after pitcher Paul Skenes went No. 1 overall to the Pittsburgh Pirates. After Skenes captured the NL Rookie of the Year honor last year, Crews gives LSU a chance to go back-to-back this year.
