Former Alabama running back Najee Harris cut by Giants after complaints about usage

Najee Harris has bounced around the NFL since his rookie contract ended. The former Pittsburgh Steelers’ first-round choice tore his Achilles just three games into his Los Angeles Chargers tenure in 2025, then signed with the New York Giants this offseason. Today, he’s looking for a new team.

The Giants released Harris on Tuesday afternoon, two days after he received four carries in New York’s loss to the New Orleans Saints. Harris, who got the starting nod for John Harbaugh because of Cam Skattebo’s fumbling issues, did not appreciate the lack of touches in his new role.

“It’s hard to get in a rhythm with one or two plays,” Harris said postgame. “The first couple runs will be like, ‘OK, how are they playing it?’ And then the next ones will be, ‘OK, this is how you attack it.’ But if you’re getting a play here and then get taken out for a series, there’s nothing you could do. That’s why I’m saying, ‘I don’t know.'”

Skattebo did not touch the ball a single time on Sunday. Tyrone Tracy Jr. ended up leading the Giants in carries (6), with Devin Singletary and Harris slotting behind him. Game script likely played a factor in the distribution — New York trailed 34-10 with 11:31 remaining in regulation — but none of New York’s running backs got a real chance to establish themselves vs. the Saints.

Unfortunately, the former Alabama star was not the right messenger for that fact. His performance on limited attempts so far this season was less than stellar.

The Giants (3-2-1) are leading the NFC East through six weeks. They face the Houston Texans at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday in Week 7 (FOX) before their Week 8 bye.
