As the NFL regular season approaches its midway point, teams around the league are beginning to feel the effects of the mounting injuries that come along with a grueling 17-game schedule.
Even the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks are not immune, with several key contributors from their championship-winning squad already missing several games due to injuries.
Star quarterback Sam Darnold appears to have rejoined that list after missing time early in the campaign, with ESPN insider Adam Schefter reporting Wednesday afternoon that the Seahawks are planning to start former Missouri Tigers standout Drew Lock on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
This will mark the second start Lock has made both this season and against the Cardinals, with his first coming in Week 2 when Darnold was sidelined with a hip injury. The veteran signal caller delivered a dominant performance, completing 19 of 26 passes for 235 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 31-7 rout of Arizona.
A second-round draft pick by the Denver Broncos in 2019, Lock has bounced around the league over the past seven seasons, primarily serving as a backup. Before beginning his NFL career, he was a star gunslinger for the Tigers from 2015-2018, setting multiple program and SEC passing records and finishing his collegiate career as the program’s all-time leading passer.
Lock put that gunslinger pedigree on full display in Week 2, and Seattle will be hoping for a similar performance this weekend as it looks to keep its NFC West hopes alive.
