Former Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar signs UDFA deal with playoff team
It took Joey Aguilar no time at all to find a home once the 2026 NFL Draft ended.
The former Tennessee quarterback is signing an undrafted free agent deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The school confirmed the news on social media after Aguilar was not selected during the draft.
While not hearing his name called might sting — it is every football player’s dream to be drafted, after all — a UDFA deal is usually a better pathway for players than a seventh-round flier.
In Jacksonville, Aguilar joins a team that just made the playoffs last season. The Jags went 13-4, winning the AFC South and claiming the 3-seed in the AFC. Jacksonville lost a wild card game to Buffalo to end the season.
Nick Mullens backed up starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence last season for Jacksonville. Mullens appeared in only 5 games and threw just 3 passes. Lawrence started all 17 games for the Jags, bouncing back nicely from an injury-shortened 2024 campaign.
Mullens is under contract for the 2026-27 season. The franchise also re-signed Carter Bradley to a reserve/future contract back in January.
Aguilar initially sought another season of eligibility to return to Tennessee next fall. His legal case ended with disappointment. Now, he’ll look to make the 53-man roster for the Jaguars.
