Former Texas signal caller Quinn Ewers is on the move, but his NFL existence won’t be leaving the Sunshine State.
On Saturday afternoon, as the preseason winds down and the 2026 regular season cranks up, it was announced that the Miami Dolphins are dealing the 7th-round pick in the 2025 draft to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The trade between in-state franchises also includes the Dolphins and Jaguars swapping Day 3 draft picks in the 2028 NFL Draft, so this is a move for both teams that carries effects a few years from now.
The exact selections that the teams had agreed to in the trade were not immediately disclosed, but what is known is that the Dolphins are continuing to revamp their quarterback room after giving up on longtime starter and former Alabama star Tua Tagovailoa during the offseason.
Ewers, who started his collegiate career at Ohio State in 2021 before transferring back to his home state, spent 3 seasons with the Longhorns from 2022-24. He was a 2nd-team All-SEC selection at Texas in 2024, then was picked by the Dolphins in the 2025 draft. After starting 3 games for Miami late last season as a rookie, going 1-2 in those games, Ewers’ football address is changing again, as he’ll compete for playing time in Jacksonville behind starter Trevor Lawrence.
The Jaguars’ QB depth chart is crowded behind Lawrence, and it includes former Tennessee star Joey Aguilar, so Ewers has a challenge on his hands to stay afloat and thrive in that quarterback room.
Ewers was dealing with a groin injury during the preseason, so he didn’t see much action with Miami, completing 1 of 8 pass attempts for 27 yards and 1 interception. That turned out to be his last action with the Dolphins, and now Ewers is moving north in the state of Florida as he tries to stick with the Jaguars for the 2026 season.
With the Jaguars beefing up their quarterback depth with the addition of Ewers, Jacksonville is trying to make sure it has enough at the position behind Lawrence to make a run at the AFC South title.
