Jalen Hurts’ 2026 NFL campaign took a scary, unfortunate turn earlier this week when team doctors discovered a superficial blood clot in his calf. The former Alabama and Oklahoma quarterback will not play against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday and could miss more games as he determines the best course of action.

Despite so much murkiness about Hurts’ health and how to proceed, the Philadelphia Eagles are optimistic he’ll return to the field soon. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Philly does not currently plan on placing its starting quarterback on injured reserve.

If Hurts were placed on injured reserve, he’d be required to miss four weeks of the season. Philadelphia doesn’t go on bye until Week 10.

The Eagles are turning to Tanner McKee in Hurts’ stead on Sunday vs. Carolina. The 2023 sixth-round pick (No. 188 overall) out of Stanford has appeared in six games for the Eagles. He’s 1-1 as a starter and has completed 61.4% of his passes (54/88) for 597 yards, five touchdowns and one interception in his NFL career.

McKee getting the starting nod comes after the Eagles released Andy Dalton on Oct. 9. The longtime Cincinnati Bengals quarterback threw an endzone interception on his lone pass attempt for the team when subbing temporarily for Hurts in Week 3 against the Chicago Bears.

Philadlephia and Carolina face off at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
