Arkansas is going through some growing pains under first-year Razorbacks coach Ryan Silverfield, as things aren’t going as well as he would have hoped for in his first year. Arkansas is 2-3 on the season entering Week 6’s matchup against Tennessee.
They’ll be moving forward without a wide receiver, too. On Monday, Silverfield relayed that Jelani Watkins is no longer with the team.
“He made a decision to focus on other things,” Silverfield said.
Watkins will instead focus on track, as he is also a member of the Arkansas track team. He already has school records in the outdoor 100 (9.95), outdoor 200 (19.87), and indoor 60 (6.46). He was the NCAA bronze medalist in the outdoors and indoors 100, while also getting a silver in the indoor 60.
Watkins is not the first player to leave the football program for track, as Maurice Gleaton made a similar decision before the start of the year after transferring in from Georgia.
Silverfield and the Razorbacks will look to get things going on the right track and pick up their first SEC win in Week 6 when they host Tennessee. Kickoff for that game will be at 4.15 p.m. ET and the game will be on the SEC Network.
