Brian Kelly’s Notre Dame Fighting Irish pulled out an overtime win on the road against Florida State. 41-38, and following the game, Kelly made a postgame comment that channeled his inner John McKay — the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach.

Kelly was interviewed on the field following the game, and he made a comment that went viral across social media.

“I’m in favor of execution,” Kelly said during the post-game interview. “Maybe our entire team needs to be executed after tonight.”

Below is the video of the comment.

McKay was asked one time what he thought of his entire team’s execution. He then answered, “I’m in favor of it.”

So, Kelly’s comment was clearly a play on McKay’s famous remarks, and he explained after the game he was just kidding.

“I was kidding,” he said, per The Athletic. “It was tongue in cheek. It wasn’t funny? It’s an old John McKay quote that he used after the game, so I was talking and making a joke about it. Why? It was taken serious? Are you people crazy?”

Notre Dame was led by quarterback Jack Coan, who threw for 366 yards and 4 touchdowns against the Seminoles defense.

The Fighting Irish start the 2021 season 1-0 and look to make another run at the College Football Playoff.
