Notre Dame adds former Arkansas tight end Ty Washington via portal
Notre Dame landed a Christmas Day transfer pledge from former Arkansas tight end Ty Washington on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-4, 247-pound pass-catcher spent 3 seasons at Arkansas and will land in South Bend with 2 years of eligibility remaining. He made 21 appearances for the Razorbacks and earned 4 starts over the last 2 seasons. South Florida, Liberty, and others were interested in Washington.
With Mitchell Evans headed to the NFL and Kevin Bauman out of eligibility, Notre Dame was in the market for a tight end to come in and add some depth to the room. Washington will join Cooper Flanagan, Eli Raridon, Jack Larsen, and incoming freshman James Flanigan in competing for reps in 2025.
A 3-star recruit from Georgia, Washington signed with Arkansas out of the 2022 class. He played in 5 games as a true freshman and scored a touchdown on his only reception of the year. In 2023, he appeared in 9 games while making 11 receptions for 170 yards and 2 scores.
This season, Washington made 7 appearances for Arkansas. In late October after a game against Mississippi State, Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman announced that Washington had been dismissed from the team for a violation of team rules. Days later, Washington joined former Razorback tight end D.J. Williams on his podcast, 4th and 5 Podcast, and revealed that he had been told before the Razorbacks’ game against the Bulldogs that his grandmother was going to hospice. When he was asked by coaches to go into the game in the fourth quarter, he said no and told the Arkansas staff he wasn’t in the frame of mind to play.
“If I could go back and take it back, I would, but I can’t. The only thing that I can basically do now is move on and go with how things are moving now,” Washington said. “But, it’s always love for Razorback nation to be honest.”
For Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, Washington’s transfer pledge closes the loop on a recruitment that dates back to 2021. When Denbrock was at Cincinnati, he recruited Washington to the Bearcats out of high school, even getting him to town on an official visit.
