Looking for its second three-game winning streak of the season, Ole Miss returns to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium this week to play host to an Arkansas team averaging more than 32 points per game.

Yet just a year ago, it was the Razorbacks’ defense that put the clamps on the Rebels in a 30-0 win in Fayetteville. But despite a 63-28 win over Tennessee-Martin, it’s the Arkansas defense that has drawn questions after it allowed 519 yards.

The Razorbacks have struggled to rush the passer and are at the bottom of the SEC with seven sacks in eight games. After a mobile quarterback had success against Arkansas for UTM, the Razorbacks went conservative with their defensive front.

Arkansas coach Bielema said his defense will face a more traditional pocket-passer in Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly.

“Hopefully we can have some kind of intimidation at the line of scrimmage and make him throw the ball,” Bielema was quoted as saying by the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Arkansas lost four players on defense last year to the NFL Draft, and that in part could be related to a defensive dropoff from last year when the unit was 10th in the country in total defense. Arkansas is 124th out of 128 teams in the country in sacks per game.

That’s not the kind of unit that had six turnovers, including three interceptions, against the Rebels last season.

But it will get a stern test against the SEC’s No. 1 scoring offense in Ole Miss at 39.4 points per game.

“We know we’ve got to get better in certain areas, and that’s our primary focus,” defensive coordinator Robb Smith was quoted as saying by The Associated Press. “We certainly have to play very good pass defense this week, if we want to be successful against Ole Miss.”

Even though Kelly was at East Mississippi Community College when this game was played last year, he’s ready for revenge.

“That was the old team, this is the new,” Kelly told the Clarion-Ledger. “But you’ve got to have a chip on your shoulder going into this game for sure. That’s what it all comes down to.”
