With Matt Corral heading to the NFL, Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss have a big quarterback battle happening during spring practice and later during fall camp.

USC transfer Jaxson Dart and Rebels returner Luke Altmyer are battling for the starting position. Dart, likely the more talented of the two, will spend the spring and fall camp learning Kiffin’s system. Altmyer already has experience in the system backing up Corral — and more importantly getting playing time in the Sugar Bowl.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Kiffin was asked about Dart and Altmyer’s play.

“I mean, I know it’s kind of coach speak but both guys have made a lot of plays,” Kiffin said. “You know, and good competition. Without getting into too much depth, probably Jaxson’s made more plays down the field, but he’s made more mistakes too. Kind of big, little, where Luke’s been a little more consistent that way. Probably what would happen, knowing one guy has been in the system longer.

“So, we’ll see.”

While Altmyer may have a slight leg-up now in the quarterback competition because of his familiarity of Kiffin’s offense, Dart has more game experience. Dart threw for 1,353 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions in 2021. Altmyer threw for 192 yards and one touchdown last season.

Dart was a 4-star prospect during the 2021 recruiting cycle, and he was ranked as the state of Utah’s No. 2 overall prospect, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. Altmyer was ranked as the nation’s No. 21 overall quarterback during the same recruiting cycle.
