Ole Miss lost a legend Saturday night.

Homer E. “Billy” Brewer, 83, passed away late Saturday afternoon at Tresevant Manor in Memphis, Tennessee, following a brief illness, the University of Mississippi announced late Saturday night.

Brewer coached Ole Miss for 11 seasons, compiling a 67-56-3 overall record and was the SEC Coach of the Year three different times: 1983, 1986 and 1990.

“As a coach and player, Billy Brewer shared a love for Ole Miss that was unparalleled,” said Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke. “He was greatly admired by his players and his teammates and will forever be engrained in the history of Rebel Football. Our prayers go out to the Brewer family and all of Rebel Nation during this time.”

Brewer had an overall impressive 124-95-6 collegiate record coaching at Southeastern Louisiana and Louisiana Tech prior to Ole Miss. Before ever becoming a coach, Brewer played QB at Ole Miss under Johnny Vaught from 1957-60.

SDS was honored to have spent some time with Brewer in  the past year. You can read that in-depth feature here.
