Ole Miss WR Elijah Moore makes first statement since Egg Bowl 'dog pee' penalty
Elijah Moore made one of the most memorable penalties in Egg Bowl history that was one of the things that caused Ole Miss to drop the Egg Bowl, 21-20, on Thanksgiving. He made his first statement about the incident on Friday.
Late in the game, Moore caught a 2-yard pass with four seconds remaining to pull the Rebels within one point. But Moore then crawled to the back of the end zone and pretended to urinate like a dog, an obvious reference to the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
“I apologize to my teammates, coaches and Rebel Nation for my actions at the end of the game,” Moore said in a statement released by the school. “It was an emotional moment, and I deeply regret it. It does not represent who I am or who we are as a team, and I will grow stronger from this mistake.”
After the 15-yard celebration penalty, K Luke Logan missed a 35-yard extra point as it also kept Ole Miss from trying a potential game-winning 2-point conversion.
After the game, Ole Miss coach Matt Luke said that behavior is not who the Rebels are, and they’ve been a disciplined team all season. He said Moore is a good kid who got caught up in the moment.
As a State fan, I’m glad we won. time to move on. I hope people let it go and give this kid a chance move forward without being reminded of his split second emotional mistake.
It wasn’t a split second. It was premeditated. Yes it’s time to move on but that starts with owning it
Agreed
I agree as a state fan, I don’t think this kids life needs to be ruined. Im sure he already feels like crap. No one was physically hurt, it was instant karma, and no one except for State fans gave a crap when Metcalf did it 2 years ago. I care more about people like Finebaum making this into a hypocritical trash talk about how all of Mississippi is classless.
Its the Ole Miss culture. Metcalf did it two years ago. Nothing happened. Karma is a byt ch.
After witnessing his classless selfish antics I’m sure I was one of millions of viewers showering Elijah with karma best wishes after the missed PeeAT…could not have had a better ending. Feel bad for the kicker. Karma spares no innocent
Coach’s fault, period. The culture or lack thereof is created by the Head Coach. I do not recall any of Hugh Freeze’s players “celebrating” in this manner. Coach Luke needs to admit his shortcomings in this, not deny it. Bush-league, end of story.
Wow. Are you trying to imply Hugh Freeze led a good clean program? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Metcalf did the same thing and he was a Freeze recruit. Oh how quickly we forget.
Kid needs to be cut from the team today and Luke needs to be fired because he’s in charge and he lost control. Plus he’s not a head coach i guess the johnny boys love keeping ole miss down cause they want to be the only ones that are remembered for winning anything so sad for the state of Mississippi
“It does not represent who I am” I call BS. It totally represents who you are because, you know, you DID it! You thought about it, you planned it, and you DID it and cost your team. Unbelievably selfish, stupid act.
I agree. Your actions define who you are. He appears to regret this, but he still did it and seemed quite proud of it until it cost his team the game. Hopefully he learns from this.
Agreed. He is that guy. Own it. You coat your team a tie and a chance to win the game. Own it.
Apologized to HIS team and coaches…. what about an apology to MS State fans, team, and coaches? Not sincere.
Translation: Wasn’t in the school administration written apology script he was forced to read so…suck it state! Lol. Gotta love rivalry week!
I agree words mean nothing. You’re actions define you. If he apologized to MSST it would’ve a little different since it was disrespectful to them but he didn’t.
“I apologize to my teammates, coaches, and Rebel Nation”
In other words, he is sorry for making the game-tying extra point more difficult which ultimately cost them the game. If he were truly sorry for his actions, there would be a few more categories of people mentioned. Like the MSU players coaches, and fans. He’s just sorry that he cost them a chance for OT.
Translation: “I’m really sorry I got caught – it wasn’t supposed to cost us 15 yards when I planned it in my head before the game.”
The little end zone specials need to stop. They not only show incredible immaturity, but poor sportsmanship. It’s narcissistic and pathetic.
Agreed. LSU’s receivers keep doing little idiotic dances when they score. It annoys me that Coach O doesn’t shut it down. There’s already been at least one penalty because of it. It’s also one of the main reasons I don’t watch the NFL. Narcissists Football League. Lol. Don’t watch the NBA anymore either. It’s not even a team game anymore.
Was Mississippi State having dog pee-ing contests on campus ? Get the low class culture out of football. It’s been an unwelcome guest here way too many decades already. Yes college students will make mistakes. It’s the not fixing it at home that causes the bigger longer lasting damage.
