Ole Miss WR Elijah Moore makes first statement since Egg Bowl 'dog pee' penalty
Elijah Moore made one of the most memorable penalties in Egg Bowl history that was one of the things that caused Ole Miss to drop the Egg Bowl, 21-20, on Thanksgiving. He made his first statement about the incident on Friday.
Late in the game, Moore caught a 2-yard pass with four seconds remaining to pull the Rebels within one point. But Moore then crawled to the back of the end zone and pretended to urinate like a dog, an obvious reference to the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
“I apologize to my teammates, coaches and Rebel Nation for my actions at the end of the game,” Moore said in a statement released by the school. “It was an emotional moment, and I deeply regret it. It does not represent who I am or who we are as a team, and I will grow stronger from this mistake.”
After the 15-yard celebration penalty, K Luke Logan missed a 35-yard extra point as it also kept Ole Miss from trying a potential game-winning 2-point conversion.
After the game, Ole Miss coach Matt Luke said that behavior is not who the Rebels are, and they’ve been a disciplined team all season. He said Moore is a good kid who got caught up in the moment.
