A rapid reaction to Ole Miss’ 42-3 loss to No. 6 TCU:

What it means: It will be tough for Hugh Freeze’s team to shake this loss. A win would’ve capped a special season for the Rebels, instead, TCU absolutely destroyed Ole Miss. It’s not a good look for an Ole Miss program looking to validate itself among the nation’s elite, as the Rebels played with stage fright from the opening kick.

What I liked: The defense. Sure, the Landsharks gave up some big plays, but Ole Miss forced four turnovers and fought valiantly to keep its team in the game early. The Rebels had trouble adjusting early to the speed at which TCU’s offense was running, but midway through the first half, Dave Wommack’s defense strung together some stops in attempt to curb the Horned Frogs’ momentum.

What I didn’t like: Where do you even begin regarding the Ole Miss offense? The offensive line was horrendous, Ole Miss got no help at wide receiver, Evan Engram was held in check and Bo Wallace had arguably his worst game as a Rebel. Ole Miss gained just 129 yards of total offense, and were one-dimensional, totaling a putrid nine rushing yards on 37 attempts. It was the worst time for the worst offensive performance during Freeze’s tenure.

Key play: On the second play of the game, TCU completed a double pass for a touchdown and 7-0 lead. TCU signal-caller Trevone Boykin passed to Aaron Green who found Kolby Listenbee for a 31-yard score. The play set the tone for the Horned Frogs, after which they never looked back.

Who’s the man: C.J. Johnson. The linebacker had a nice day for Ole Miss, shooting through the gaps on multiple plays and made plays. Johnson also recovered a TCU fumble after Wallace threw an interception.

What’s next: The loss is a tough one to swallow the Rebels, who now have to sit on this for months before the 2015 season rolls around. Ole Miss is a good team that had a good season, but there are questions to be answered. Specifically, at quarterback. Freeze has a tough task ahead of him to duplicate the glimpses of success we saw in 2014.
