Here are a few grades from Ole Miss’ 42-3 loss to No. 6 TCU:

OFFENSE: F

The Rebels’ offensive effort was a complete failure, there’s no way around it. Ole Miss looked a step slower, less physical and overmatched. The offense converted on just three of 15 third down chances and turned the ball over four times, including a humiliating pick-six in which Bo Wallace attempted to escape a safety by throwing the ball up. He was picked off by a TCU defender in the end zone. The run game — after a strong outing in the Egg Bowl — was nonexistent, gaining just nine yards on 37 attempts. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil, arguably the most important player on the roster, went down with a stomach-turning leg injury late in the first half, killing an already-struggling offensive line. The loss of playmaker Laquon Treadwell never loomed larger than during Wednesday’s loss.

DEFENSE: C

Looking at the numbers, it seems as if this grade should be worse. In actuality, Ole Miss didn’t play poorly on the defensive side of the ball. The Landsharks were behind the eight-ball all afternoon having to deal with negative field position, an early deficit and a dizzying pace from the Horned Frogs offense. The Rebels surrendered 42 points and 423 yards of total offense behind a balanced TCU offense. On the bright side, Ole Miss forced four Horned Frogs turnovers but could never overcome the ineptness of the its offensive counterparts.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B

Considering that Gary Wunderlich’s 27-yard field goal were the only Rebels points of the afternoon, Ole Miss’ special teams earns a passing grade. Will Gleeson booted some nice punts trying to flip the field position advantage TCU held early.

COACHING: C

Third-year head coach Hugh Freeze looked ill-prepared on the biggest stage of his career, and did nothing to try and get his offense into a rhythm after it was clear the TCU defense was at another level early in the first half. The Rebels made no attempt to establish the run and put the game on Wallace’s shoulders from the start. It was the not the best coaching performance of his career.

OVERALL: D+

There’s nothing to take away from this game, yet Ole Miss has to look back on it during the coming months. The 39-point loss is the worst in school history and tied for worst in SEC history. The Rebels have plenty of areas of concern to address, and it’s a disappointing ending to an otherwise good season. The defense carried the team once again, and the offense hit a low against a great defense and without its star playmaker.
