Here’s what Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze had to say after No. 13 Ole Miss fell to Memphis 37-24 on Saturday.

On Memphis’ win: “First, congrats to (Memphis coach) Justin (Fuente) and his squad. He’s done a really nice job here, and he deserved to win today. Our our end, very disappointing. I’ve been on the other side of a couple of these wins like that, and I know what that feels like. It’s crushing to be on the other side. We did not play particularly well.”

On his team’s performance: “It was very disappointing the way we played. It starts with me, and I have to take responsibility for us, for all facets of us. We were about as bad as you can get on third down, getting off the field and at times converting those third downs. It’s a bad day, and I’m disappointed and hurt for the Ole Miss people more than words can really say because I understand it. I know how they feel about their program, and they deserved better today for sure.”

On the team’s tackling on third-and-long: “I wish I had all the adjectives. It was as bad as I’ve ever seen.”

On whether the team should accept its inability to run the ball and pass more: “Maybe so. We’ll have to evaluate that and see what we think going into next week. I haven’t watched next week’s opponent yet.”

On what’s happened to Ole Miss since the win over Alabama: “I don’t know. Injuries have hurt obviously, but that’s not the reason we didn’t play well today. I’ve got to coach them better, and we have to have leadership in the locker room. We’ve got to do something to get off the field and convert on third downs.”

On Robert Nkemdiche: “He had a concussion, and we’ll go through that protocol.”

On the impact of Nkemdiche’s departure: “I don’t know. I wasn’t so sure we struggled as much up front as we did just on the back end. I mean, it sure didn’t help to lose him, but I don’t know if that was the reason.”

On whether he thought about the risk of losing Nkemdiche from using him on offense: “You always think about the risk. You’re danged if you do, danged if you don’t. You’re third-and-1 and he just got tackled on his head. That can happen any play. I don’t think you can operate out of fear of getting injured if it helps your football team.”
