Joel Klatt talked about Georgia coach Kirby Smart’s chance of surpassing Alabama coach Nick Saban, that is, if the Bulldogs complete a 3-peat this season.

On “The Joel Klatt Show” podcast, Klatt noted what Smart and the Bulldogs are doing is “unprecedented” and “really special” as the program attempts to capture its third-straight national title.

“I don’t want to take anything away from Kirby and Georgia because what they’re doing is awesome,” Klatt said.

Klatt, however, said what Smart and Georgia are accomplishing is not at the level of what Saban and Alabama have achieved, even if the Bulldogs win 3 championships in a row.

“Three years does not make a Saban,” Klatt said, noting Saban and the Crimson Tide’s 6 national titles in 12 years.

Klatt noted other college football programs “get within a breath” of what Georgia is trying to reach.

“Georgia still has to run through, granted it’s a cake schedule, and have potential to get to that point,” Klatt said. “I don’t know if they’ll win a 3rd-straight (national title), but they’re going to have that chance.”

But, Klatt added: “We haven’t seen a level of dominance in a 12-year stretch like we’ve seen from Nick Saban and Alabama, ever.”

“That’s over (12 years) and multiple cycles of recruiting, multiple assistant coaching and coordinator staffs,” Klatt said.

Klatt noted that even if Smart and the Bulldogs grab another national crown, Smart is “going to have to put together another stretch.”

“(Smart) is going to have to do this for 10 more years in order for me to put him in the same breath as Saban,” Klatt said.
