We’re having some fun as we approach the 2015 college football season by looking at ten headlines that we do not expect to see in the news come the fall. Today, we take a look at Part 2 and the second set of five headlines. You can view Part 1 here.

6. Maty Mauk prefers to stay in the pocket in 2015

Missouri’s Maty Mauk is one of the most interesting players in the SEC, but if you ask an average SEC fan, Mauk’s ability and reliability aren’t perceived to be very high. He’s shown glimpses of talent and has been instrumental (at times) in Missouri’s back-to-back SEC East championships, but inconsistency seems to remain a very real part of Mauk’s game.

Perhaps the biggest thing people know about Mauk, besides his fabulous head of hair combined with a great red beard, is how he likes to run around. It has become pretty evident that Mauk is more comfortable leaving the pocket, than sitting in it during pass plays. Mauk can hit some nice throws while on the run, but most agree that for Missouri’s offense to execute well, Mauk needs to improve on selecting when to leave and when to remain in the pocket.

With that said, Mauk’s running does give us gems such as when he ran into the Ol’ Ball Coach last year:

7. John L. Smith teaching Financial Peace University

There are many facets to the former Arkansas head coach who was once tasked with righting the ship following Bobby Petrino’s motorcycle crash, and we appreciate each one of them. One of the more interesting facets to the man who brought us “SMILE!” is his financial experience.

Somehow, Smith managed to accumulate over $40 million in debt surrounding some speculative real estate investments in the state of Kentucky. If you’ve seen his press conferences during his tenure as the head coach of the Razorbacks, it’s easy to see how Smith possibly sweet-talked some creditors into handing over that much cheddar.

Smith has gone through the bankruptcy process in recent years, and it sounds like he was even able to hide some cash and real estate holdings by moving them around prior to the bankruptcy process. Well done, coach!

Smith now coaches at Fort Lewis College, a D-II program, in Durango, Colorado.

8. Louisiana Tech’s Jeff Driskel making strong push for Heisman

Was Florida’s offensive woes in recent years mostly due to quarterback Jeff Driskel or due to head coach Will Muschamp? Blame can probably be placed on both, but Driskel gets the chance in 2015 to start anew at Louisiana Tech.

When Driskel transferred, some fans and members of the media speculated that Driskel would play some strong football for Skip Holtz’s Bulldogs. I do not count myself as a member of this group. I don’t expect much out of the ex-Gator, other than some 2015 Vines similar to the following:

9. Vanderbilt gives Derek Mason extension, raise

The former defensive coordinator for the Stanford Cardinal had a rough first season in Nashville. While Mason is a respected football coach, following James Franklin’s success at Vandy is no easy task.

Many pundits view Mason already approaching hot seat status at Vanderbilt. While expectations for wins at Vanderbilt aren’t the same as other SEC programs, we’re in an era where all SEC programs are flush with cash. As such, being competitive in the conference is a must.

Can Mason get there? If 2015 is like 2014, it’ll be difficult to find believers.

10. Missouri fans feel respected by SEC brethren

How many times does Missouri need to win the SEC East before SEC fans start to respect the Tigers and view them as a legitimate SEC Championship contender? It seems like the answer is more than two.

Despite going back-to-back in the SEC East, Missouri is still viewed as a 2nd-tier team in the SEC by many. Surely a three-peat would put Missouri into conversation as one of the best that the SEC has to offer, no?

Regardless, look on the bright side Missouri fans, two of the five headlines in this article are regarding the Missouri Tigers!
