Mike Leach’s tragic passing in December of 2022 left the college football world devastated. The former Mississippi State, Washington State and Texas Tech head coach was known for his open, fun and sometimes bizarre personality off the field and his incredible offensive mind on the field.

On Wednesday, CBS Sports showed a clip that brought together 5 SEC coaches – Clark Lea, Kirby Smart, Mark Stoops, Hugh Freeze and Zach Arnett – to discuss the impact left by Leach even after his passing. Each also gave a personal story that gives you a look into who Leach was as a person.

Smart’s story told of an especially on-brand moment from Leach. The Georgia head coach recalled a time he was on a recruiting visit to Valdosta State, where Leach was the offensive coordinator.

Smart insisted that Leach showed up to practice shirtless, either rollerblading or rollerskating (he couldn’t remember exactly). He mentioned how that stuck with him through all the years on account of how unique it was for a coach.

Mark Stoops spoke to Leach’s famous ability to hold a conversation. The Kentucky head coach insisted that if you saw Leach, you’d better carve out at least 30 minutes on your calendar because he won’t let you leave before he’s had a lengthy conversation.
