Despite the Patriots fatigue, let’s be honest. You’re going to watch the Super Bowl LIII on Sunday.

Yes, I’m talking to you, SEC fan who probably has more gambling/commercials interest than the actual game itself.

Maybe that is you, or maybe you just miss SEC football and a championship game being played in Atlanta makes you not miss it as much.

Whatever the case, fear not, SEC fan. I have 5 things for you to watch for Sunday.

1. The Georgia running back battle

Dd you know that a pair of former Georgia star running backs will be facing off in Super Bowl LIII? Just kidding. Of course you knew that. You also heard that they’re coming back to the place where they became 2 of the best to ever do it in the state of Georgia.

Sony Michel and Todd Gurley will get plenty of the side-by-side comparisons all game. They should. Both are former first-round picks who are making their teams like wise for bucking the trend of waiting on running backs. As a result, they’re part of a new trend of Georgia running backs who dominate at the college level, get picked high in the draft and wind up being extremely productive NFL players.

The golden era of Georgia running backs in the NFL is here, and so are the constant reminders that Michel and Gurley were part of the same backfield in 2014. Get ready for more of those flashback photos come Sunday, especially in the likely event that both make their way into the end zone.

2. Stephon Gilmore continuing his All-Pro season

The former South Carolina star is one of those guys that if you don’t follow the NFL closely, you probably haven’t seen how much he’s blossomed in the last few years. After 5 years with the Bills, Gilmore signed a $65 million deal with the Patriots in 2017. He’s been worth every penny.

This has been the best year yet for the former first-round pick. Not only did he make another Pro Bowl, but the All-Pro cornerback was Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded player at the position.

Gilmore could get matched up with former Patriot Brandin Cooks. Whoever he lines up against, he’ll go against the Rams’ prolific passing game. Sean McVay will have Gilmore at the top of his scouting report.

3. A Cordarrelle Patterson wrinkle

OK, so this is becoming just a guide for Rock Hill, S.C., residents to watch the Super Bowl. Like Gilmore, Patterson also hails from Rock Hill. But unlike Gilmore, Patterson left the state to play his college ball at Tennessee.

Also unlike Gilmore, Patterson probably hasn’t lived up to his first-round hype yet. He had an up-and-down career as a receiver, which ultimately allowed the Patriots to scoop him up for next to nothing in a 2018 trade with the Raiders. But now, the Tennessee record-setter for all-purpose yards has an all-purpose role with New England.

Besides being a second-team All-Pro return man, Patterson has gotten involved in the offense in a variety of ways. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will line him up all over as a receiver to try and get him looks in space. The Patriots even used Patterson as a primary tailback earlier in the season when they were depleted at running back.

Patterson could become a major factor on some sort of a jet sweep or a gadget play at some point. The man Tom Brady calls “The Experiment” is too dangerous not to be a part of the game plan.

4. Another game-winning play from Dante Fowler?

So you know how you’ve been constantly hearing about Saints fans who still upset about the blown pass interference call? Well, nobody is talking about that if New Orleans responds by storming down the field and scoring a game-winning touchdown in overtime.

Why didn’t that happen? Oh, that’s right. Because Fowler made the play of the day by getting to Drew Brees and forcing an interception:

The former Gator has been fun to watch playing alongside Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh since he was traded by the Jaguars in the middle of the season. He’s sort of the forgotten guy in that 3-4, but he’s been as good as any Rams defensive player in the postseason. He’s got a sack in each Rams playoffs game so far, and against the less-than-mobile Brady, he could have another big day.

Remember last year when Brandon Graham’s strip sack of Brady ended Super Bowl LII? Perhaps Fowler will give the Patriots a similar crushing finish like he did against the Saints.

5. All the Atlanta championship flashbacks

So we know that the last Super Bowl in Atlanta was epic. Everyone over the age of 25 probably remembers the Titans coming up 1 yard short of taking down the Rams. Who made that legendary tackle on Kevin Dyson to end Super Bowl XXXIV? That would be former Mizzou linebacker Mike Jones (I realize he didn’t play in the SEC, but hey, it still counts).

Besides seeing that flashback, you should also see a look back at the past 2 championship games played in Atlanta. Why? In case you forgot, both were epic.

Georgia-Alabama Part I with 2nd-and-26 happened in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, as did the Jalen Hurts comeback for the ages in the 2018 SEC Championship. I realize that Georgia fans have probably tried to black that out and pretend that neither happened. That’s fair.

Just to appease to home crowd, it might be wise to only show that on the broadcast and not on the in-house jumbo screen.

Oh, and people flipping out about the Mercedes-Benz Stadium Chick-fil-A being closed because it’s Sunday.

Hey, New England/Los Angeles visitors: Welcome to the struggle that SEC fans deal with year-round.
