Week 4 of the SEC football season provided another great weekend of conference pride filled with marquee matchups and thrilling upsets. This weekend should bring the same excitement to the SEC as rivalry games fill the schedule.

Here are the biggest storylines for every SEC team heading into Week 5.

Alabama – Talk about an offensive performance! Alabama was very impressive against the Florida Gators in Week 4, showing off a balanced offense attack behind a strong game from quarterback Blake Sims and wide receiver Amari Cooper. Everyone knew Cooper was ultra-talented, but Sims really impressed a lot of people with his 445 passing yards against a tough Florida defense. The Crimson Tide have a bye week before taking on Ole Miss in two weeks, but if Alabama’s offense can boast a dangerous passing game on top of its dominating run game, Alabama should be one of the top teams all season.

Arkansas – For the Hogs, it’s simple. This weekend is the new “biggest game” for Bret Bielema and his coaching staff. So far this season, Arkansas has played well. Texas A&M is their opponent this weekend and the Hogs will be the definite underdogs against the No. 6 ranked Aggies. Despite the discrepancy in the rankings, Arkansas won’t sneak up on anybody anymore after their performance in recent weeks. They have upset aspirations and have an opportunity to shake up the SEC West tremendously. They’ll get to try for it on a national stage as the game is being broadcasted on CBS at 3:30 p.m.

Auburn – Coming off a tough and impressive road win against Kansas State, the Tigers catch a break against Louisiana Tech. Auburn’s offense isn’t of any concern and after a dominating defensive performance, it appears the defensive side for the Tigers is coming along. Another steady performance from the defense against Louisiana Tech should give Auburn even more confidence before they get into the meat of their SEC schedule.

Florida – On the surface, it was just a 21-point loss on the road to the No. 3 ranked team in the nation. Not bad considering where Florida is at right now as a program. However, looking further into the game, it was completely lopsided stats-wise and the offense stalled and couldn’t take advantage of their opportunities. The Gators have a bye week this week and it probably couldn’t come at a better time as Will Muschamp and his staff attempt to work through the issues at quarterback and in the secondary.

Georgia – Troy didn’t provide much resistance to the Bulldogs in a 66-0 blowout win for Georgia. This week, the Bulldogs face their SEC rival Tennessee at home in what will more than likely be a Georgia win. However, it’ll be important for quarterback Hutson Mason to play well this weekend. He absolutely needs to prove he deserves respect from opposing defenses moving forward or Georgia’s offense could become too one-sided, leading to some tough games later in the year.

Kentucky – The last time we saw the Wildcats was in their three overtime loss to the Gators in The Swamp. There’s no question Kentucky came out as good as a team can after a loss, appearing to be much more improved than in years past. This week, Kentucky gets a Vanderbilt squad that gave South Carolina a run for its money in Nashville in Week 4. This should still be a rather easy win for Kentucky as the Commodores should merely provide another tune up game for the Cats before a bigger show awaits them in Week 6 – a home night game against South Carolina on SEC Network.

LSU – In somewhat surprising fashion, LSU fell to Mississippi State at home for just its fourth loss in a night home game under head coach Les Miles. Unlike Florida, LSU doesn’t get the luxury of a bye week this week to figure out what they’re going to do at quarterback. Anthony Jennings will probably still get the start, but after Brandon Harris’ late-game performance last week, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Miles give Harris more playing time to inject some energy into a rather average LSU offense. Another strong performance by Harris against New Mexico State could make things interesting again in the Tigers’ quarterback competition.

Mississippi State – From unranked to a top-20 team, that’s what quarterback Dak Prescott did for the Mississippi State Bulldogs this past weekend. Prescott’s 350-plus total yards against LSU advanced his Heisman candidacy even further. Moving forward, the Bulldogs appear to be a possible threat to Alabama, Auburn and Texas A&M’s chances of winning the SEC West and possibly even compete for the division title themselves. They’ll get a bye week before taking on a tough two-game stretch against Auburn and Texas A&M. We’ll know for sure just how serious of a contender Missisisppi State is after those to match ups.

Missouri – Easily the worst loss of the weekend goes to the Missouri Tigers, who suffered a home defeat at the hands of the lowly Indiana Hoosiers. Now, it’ll be up to quarterback Maty Mauk and an aggressive defensive line to get the Tigers back on track. Unfortunately, they won’t have much time to recuperate with a road trip to Columbia awaiting Gary Pinkel and his squad this weekend. A strong performance against the Gamecocks would quickly quell any fears of this team no longer contending for the SEC East.

Ole Miss – The Rebels have another cupcake matchup this week against the Memphis Tigers, so it should be an easy win for Ole Miss. The key for the Rebels will be to string together another strong performance this week as they prepare for Alabama in two weeks. They’ll need to build as much confidence as possible before the Crimson Tide come to town.

South Carolina – In a game that was definitely too close for comfort, South Carolina edged out a 14-point win against Vanderbilt. Everyone was ready to disregard the Gamecocks in the SEC East after a blowout season-opening loss to Texas A&M, but South Carolina has quietly built a respectable early-season resume with wins against both ranked Georgia and ECU. Missouri’s offense should test South Carolina’s questionable defense this weekend, so it should be a good test for their secondary to improve before traveling to Kentucky next week.

Tennessee – The Vols enjoyed a bye week after a tough loss on the road against Oklahoma and now Tennessee is faced with another tough road test against their SEC East rival Georgia. It’ll be Tennessee’s SEC opener, so the conference will find out just how serious of a contender an improved Vols team will be in the SEC this season.

Texas A&M – After a season-opening win against South Carolina, the Aggies have had three straight cupcake opponents. That’ll change this weekend when they travel to Arlington, Texas to take on a physical Arkansas bunch. More than likely, this will be a bigger statement game for Texas A&M’s defense rather than its offense. The Aggies defense will be tasked with stopping an incredibly tough Arkansas run game, which has gashed defenses and leads the SEC in rushing yards per game.

Vanderbilt – The start to Vanderbilt’s season was about as abysmal as possible, but a 14-point loss to South Carolina last week is a definite step forward for Derek Mason’s team. They draw an improved Kentucky team on the road this weekend and it should provide an opportunity for the Commodores to build on last week’s performance. The quarterback situation is still up in the air as Patton Robinette suffered an injury and Wade Freebeck played well as his replacement. Whenever Robinette does return, it’ll be interesting to see how Mason handles it, considering it’s been somewhat of a revolving door at the quarterback position so far this season.
