Another week, another great Saturday of SEC football. Heading into Week 3, there are a few games featuring two SEC teams as Georgia and South Carolina meet in Columbia, while Kentucky and Florida square off in The Swamp. It won’t be too long now until virtually every SEC game is within the conference.

Let’s discuss the biggest storylines for every SEC team heading into their upcoming games.

Alabama – With a 41-0 score against Florida Atlantic, the game wasn’t very competitive, but the quarterback situation took over. Both Blake Sims and Jacob Coker got significant playing time in what turned out to be a rain-shortened game. Sims threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns, while Coker passed for 202 yards and one touchdown. Despite barely seeing the field in the team’s season-opener, Coker still has a chance to be this team’s starting quarterback and this competition isn’t over, according to head coach Nick Saban. The Florida State transfer played well against FAU, but missed some key plays downfield. Moving forward, all eyes will be on Sims and Coker as they continue to battle it out on the field. With Florida coming to town in two weeks, I would bet a decision is made sometime before then.

Arkansas – The Razorbacks absolutely destroyed Nicholls State 73-7, snapping their 10-game losing streak. Arkansas fans everywhere rejoiced at the sight of big play after big play this past Saturday. Quarterback Brandon Allen only completed 4-of-5 passes, but all four passes went for touchdowns. Safe to say, it was a successful day offensively for the Hogs. In Week 3, Arkansas travels to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech. The Red Raiders haven’t looked particularly great in their first two games, but make no mistake, this is easily one of the season’s most important games for the Hogs. If they win here, their chances look much better to get six wins on the season and reach a bowl game. A win in Lubbock would carry a huge momentum swing for the Razorbacks as they prepare to take on their SEC schedule.

Auburn – The Tigers are on a bye week this weekend. They’ll face a tough test next week, however, when they travel to Manhattan, Kansas to face Kansas State. Gus Malzahn is probably very pleased that they have an extra week of preparation to figure out how to stop Wildcats quarterback Jake Waters.

Florida – It’s official. The Gators have finally played a game in 2014, something their fans thought may never happen after Week 1’s game was cancelled due to weather. It was clear in their season-opener against Eastern Michigan that the offense is much improved. Quarterback Jeff Driskel spread the ball around well, throwing to 10 different receivers as well as setting a career-high with 45 passing attempts. Despite the strong offensive showing in Week 2, this week’s game versus Kentucky’s AJ Stamps and the rest of the UK defense will be the Gators’ first real test for the offense. Anchored by a stingy defense, another quality offensive performance by Driskel and company could put Alabama on upset alert when Florida heads into Tuscaloosa on Sept. 20.

Georgia – The Bulldogs are coming off a bye week and will travel to Columbia to open up their SEC schedule against the Gamecocks. All anyone knows about Georgia is their dominating performance against Clemson. After this week we’ll have a better idea of just how good Georgia could be this season. A win here for the Bulldogs and they’ll be firmly in the driver seat in the SEC East, while also essentially ending South Carolina’s chances of reaching the SEC Championship game.

Kentucky – Wow, what a great first two games for the Wildcats. They’ve come out the gates in 2014 looking like a real SEC team. JUCO transfer AJ Stamps has taken over the UK secondary and looked menacing thus far. Combine him with defensive ends Bud Dupree and Za’Darius Smith and the Wildcats have a very fast and physical defense. Quarterback Patrick Towles has yet to turn the ball over and he now has impact offensive weapons in Braylon Heard, Ryan Timmons and Javess Blue. This week’s matchup with Florida is will be the best indicator so far of just how much progress UK has made in Mark Stoops’ second year as head coach. Anything but a blowout loss to the Gators – a team UK has lost 27 straight to – should have Big Blue Nation excited about where this team is headed.

LSU – Similar to Alabama, it’s the quarterback situation that has taken center stage for the Tigers. Both quarterbacks – Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris – played last week, and while there might not be as much of a competition in Baton Rouge like in Tuscaloosa, it’s still an intriguing situation. Head coach Les Miles said he he thinks Jennings can play better than he has in the first two weeks, but if Jennings is unable to undoubtedly prove he’s worthy of being the starter, he may keep the door open just long enough for Harris to work his way back into the picture. With the LSU defense as strong as ever and Leonard Fournette doing Leonard Fournette things, all eyes will be on the LSU signal callers for their Week 3 matchup against UL Monroe.

Mississippi State – In somewhat unusual circumstances, the Bulldogs travel to play South Alabama for a true road game in Mobile, Ala. The story of the season has been quarterback Dak Prescott, who leads the conference with eight touchdowns. Prescott hasn’t been perfect, but there’s arguably no SEC quarterback who has been as good as him so far. South Alabama shouldn’t provide too much of a challenge for Dan Mullen and his team, but their secondary was exposed big time against UAB, who torched the Bulldogs with three passing plays of 70 yards or more. They’ll need to shore up the weaknesses in the secondary before taking on LSU in two weeks in Baton Rouge.

Missouri – The Tigers had probably the conference’s most impressive win this past Saturday, traveling to Toledo and defeating the Rockets 49-24. Quarterback Maty Mauk enjoyed a six-touchdown breakout performance and was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week. Moving forward, he’ll be the biggest talking point for the Tigers as they begin to face tougher competition. If Mauk can rise up to the challenge, Missouri could have a strong chance at repeating as SEC East champions, especially with the offensive weapons and physical defensive line they possess.

Ole Miss – A 41-3 victory over Vanderbilt  certainly opened some eyes, despite the Commodores being so much worse than everyone thought going into the season. For the Rebels, it was the dominating fashion in which they won that was so impressive. After another shut-down performance, the argument can certainly be made that this Ole Miss defense is one of the best, if not the best in the SEC. As always with Ole Miss, however, quarterback Bo Wallace will be the center of attention. He looked much better against Vanderbilt, throwing for 320 yards and one touchdown, but most importantly the senior signal caller had no turnovers. They shouldn’t have too much trouble against UL Lafayette this weekend, but Bo Wallace must continue to improve before the Rebels begin taking on the big boys of the SEC in just a few weeks

South Carolina – It was a win for South Carolina this past weekend, but concerns still very much remain heading into their Week 3 matchup against Georgia. Thankfully for the Gamecocks’ secondary (who has allowed 832 passing yards in two game) Georgia’s primary offensive attack is the run game. We’ll see what South Carolina’s front seven is made of this week facing backs like Todd Gurley and Nick Chubb. While many expect Georgia to win this game, an upset win by South Carolina isn’t unrealistic. Until their loss against Texas A&M two weeks ago, South Carolina had won 18 straight at home and they can certainly start another home-winning streak again this week.

Tennessee – Another brick was laid in the foundation for Butch Jones and the Tennessee Vols this past weekend with a victory over a pesky Arkansas State team. Now, a real test for the Vols as they travel to Norman, Okla. to take on the Oklahoma Sooners. Tennessee has had some exciting wins these past few weeks, but with an incredibly tough challenge ahead of them on Saturday, we’ll all find out very soon just how improved this Tennessee team is in Jones’ second year. A quality performance in Norman should give Tennessee a big momentum boost heading into their first SEC game against Georgia in two weeks.

Texas A&M – The Aggies continue to score points at will, putting up another 73 points against Lamar this past weekend. Quarterback Kenny HIll will keep being the talk of College Station after adding another 283 yards and four touchdowns to his season total. Texas A&M has two easy opponents for their next two games, so expect “Kenny Trill” to keep putting up big-time numbers in Texas A&M’s explosive offense.

Vanderbilt – Easily the worst team in the SEC this season, Vanderbilt has struggled to put any points on the board. They’ve been outscored 78-10 in their first two games and things don’t look to be getting any better anytime soon. The quarterback situation is a mess and no matter who has been under center, they’ve all played poorly. Head coach Derek Mason certainly has his hands full in fixing this mess as the program really took a nose dive with the departure of key offensive players from last season as well as former head coach James Franklin. The ‘Dores face UMass this week, but with how things have looked so far, it’s a game that may not be a slam-dunk win for Vanderbilt after all.
