College football fans have come to associate CBS’s intro music with the SEC game of the week.
It’s a song that has become synonymous with the SEC. With Verne Lundquist’s voice. Gary Danielson’s voice. Brad Nesser. Jamie Erdahl. The list goes on.
But, as Bob Dylan wrote, the times they are a-changin’.
After announcing a new media rights deal with the Big Ten, which will include B1G games in the 3:30 p.m. ET slot on CBS, the network released a hype video, using the same intro music SEC fans have grown to love:
Hello, @B1Gfootball.
Hit the music. pic.twitter.com/PbMHPql1Cz— CBS Sports (@CBSSports) August 18, 2022
As you might expect, this is going to take some getting used to from fans across the country, and particularly in the southeast. Here was some of the reaction to the video on Twitter:
You have now turned this into the Kirkland brand of music intros…congrats pic.twitter.com/vNnJGYPaMk

That song deserves better than Iowa vs Michigan State

Change the theme song this is blasphemy

That intro song will be completely waisted on an Iowa-Penn State 6-5 final score ?.

As a big ten fan this just doesn’t feel right. Growing up the sec was always on cbs. Watched alot of Florida vs whoever and this is just awkward.

This is just weird…like when FOX baseball games where using the football music.

This would be like putting Jim Nantz's intro to the Masters on a Putt Putt golf competition. https://t.co/0lnHKefu8I

We’re just recycling the theme from the SEC? https://t.co/rgdWv6bi7j

It seems the theme song is here to stay, though. Now, it’ll be up to ESPN/ABC to come up with intro music that SEC fans love for the game of the week starting in 2024.
