College Football Playoff to hold ‘in-depth discussions’ over future of CFP seeding, per report

The College Football Playoff is in the middle of its first year with 12 teams, as the quarterfinal round will begin on New Year’s Eve as Boise State and Penn State will square off in the Fiesta Bowl.

Boise State ended up as the No. 3 seed in the CFP because of its finish among conference champions. The seeding has become a big talking point as the first round matchups were blowouts, while No. 1 seed Oregon is playing arguably the most talented team in Ohio State in a quarterfinal matchup.

Critics are saying that conference champions deserve to be in the CFP, but not necessarily have a first-round bye. According to CFB insider Brett McMurphy, there will be ‘in-depth’ conversations on whether or not changes will be made in 2025. McMurphy shared that under a proposed format, Oregon, Georgia, Texas and Penn State would have received byes as the top 4 seeds.

This being the first year of the new CFP format, there was no telling how the bracket would unfold. However, after how the bracket looked and with all of the blowouts in Week 1 of the CFP, people were going to start clamoring for changes. There is a legitimate argument that No. 1 seed Oregon has the toughest path to a national title despite being the only undefeated team in the country.
