College GameDay is headed to Charlotte for Week 1 of the 2023 season.

The GameDay crew will be on location for South Carolina-North Carolina on Sept. 2. ESPN announced that decision on Monday afternoon.

Here’s the announcement:

ESPN chose to head to Charlotte for this contest over other potential Week 1 matchups such as Ohio State-Indiana and West Virginia-Penn State.

Florida State and LSU’s highly-anticipated meeting in Week 1 will be played on Sunday, Sept. 3. That game being played later in the weekend likely took it out of consideration for GameDay’s Saturday showcase.

South Carolina and North Carolina last played in 2021 in Charlotte, with the Gamecocks winning 38-21 in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

The Gamecocks enter this season with high expectations. They picked up a pair of top-10 wins over Tennessee and Clemson at the end of last season and return starting quarterback Spencer Rattler.

UNC also has high hopes for the 2023 campaign. Drake Maye figures to be one of the top passers in the country and the Tar Heels will hope to have an improved defense this season as well.

North Carolina is 35-20-4 all-time against South Carolina.
