There is plenty to learn from former Florida coach Steve Spurrier. After all, he’s widely considered one of the best offensive minds and quarterback coaches in the history of college football.

However,  if there’s one thing that makes Spurrier stand out on a grander scale, it is his penchant for making subtle, not-so-veiled critiques of his opponents.

Apparently, former Gator quarterback Shane Matthews sees the fun in a gentle jab as well. During an appearance on 1010 XL/92.5 FM on Wednesday, the former Florida star had Kentucky in his crosshairs:

“Kentucky’s getting all this love, somehow,” he said. “It seems like Kentucky gets all this love every year. Until they can complete a forward pass, I have a hard time looking at Kentucky as a team that can beat us.”

The criticism of the Wildcats certainly has some basis. Yes, Mark Stoops has gotten Kentucky to a level of respectability most would have thought was unlikely. However, Stoops has done so with a stout defense and a ball-control offense. Understandably, that’s not Matthews’ preference. In Spurrier’s fun-and-gun offense of the 1990s, Matthews won an SEC Championship and was named the SEC Player of the Year in 1990 and 1991. Obviously, he didn’t do that by handing the ball off.

Kentucky hosts Florida on Oct. 2. It seems unlikely that Stoops will be calling Matthews for advice on how to run an offense.
