Many SEC fans have been there.

You pick a weekend to attend your home team’s game, figure out lodging and transportation but run into problems with tailgate options.

Some lots are too pricey. Others are too far away from the stadium. Still, some Saturdays are so busy that it’s nearly impossible to find a spot to grill and pregame.

But now there’s a new website to help spread the tailgate wealth.

TailMate launched as an online marketplace for college football fans interested in sharing the tailgating experience. It allows those without a tailgating spot to join in on others’ parties, and also gives regular tailgaters a chance to make an extra buck. Prices vary depending on the lot location and food and drink offerings.

If it seems like the site is simply seeking to commercialize off one of the best parts about college football, keep in mind that schools have been doing the same for years. Lots near South Carolina’s Williams Brice Stadium range  from $750-400, not to mention the six-figure Cockabooses. SC students, on the other hand, mostly tailgate away from the stadium in sub-par lots.

On its face, TailMate appears to be a more organic alternative to the private tailgating sections and segregated lots on some SEC campuses.

The site even allows renters to block opposing fans from purchasing space. That’s right – there won’t be any unnecessary Alabama-Auburn, Georgia-Florida or Mississippi State-Ole Miss mingling. That’s probably a good thing, because TaileMate monitors renter and guest reviews while promising to ban those who are a detriment to the community.

Currently, there are two listings for early-season SEC tailgates. An LSU fan is selling space for $40 a person for the Tigers’ home opener against McNeese State. The fan promises a DJ, food and a television, but warns that it may get “wild” and is not family friendly. Another LSU fan is selling his tailgate for the Tigers’ next home game against Auburn. This one is $35 a person, and promises Cajun cuisine, beer pong and a keg.

While still in its infancy, TailMate appears to be a great alternative to rising lot prices which are overtaking SEC campuses. Just be sure to stay away from the moldy veggie tray if you decide to partake in the festivities.
