Joel Klatt is calling for an end to the long-held conventional wisdom that the SEC is college football’s best conference.
Klatt made his remarks on Thursday night following Georgia’s loss to Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. The result means the SEC will have just 1 representative in the semifinals — Texas. The Longhorns will be accompanied by 2 teams from the Big Ten — Ohio State and Penn State — as well as an independent in Notre Dame.
Klatt hammered the SEC in his postgame remarks as he pointed out the league’s deficiencies in 2024.
“The narrative that the SEC is clearly the best conference needs to die,” Klatt said. “Because it’s pretty clear that it’s over … It just needs to die. And it’s over. Because it’s been proven to be over. The games have played out. So let’s just try to evaluate the games for what they are and the teams for what they are, without all of this spin.”
Klatt also pointed out that the Big Ten has gone 4-1 in bowl games against the SEC this season.
Here’s a full clip from his remarks:
It’s worth noting that the SEC went 3-1 against the Big Ten during the regular season, with LSU’s Week 1 loss to USC being the league’s only blemish in head-to-head matchups.
The 2 mega conferences will go head-to-head at least one more time this season when Ohio State takes on Texas in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 10.
