A little more than three years ago, Alabama and LSU met in a game that lived up to all the hype.

Billed as the “Game of the Century,” the Tigers and Crimson Tide knocked each other silly for three-and-a-half hours in front of 100,000 screaming fans on Nov. 5, 2011. Under the bright lights in Bryant-Denny Stadium, No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama played each other to a near standstill, with the game going to overtime and only two field goals apiece on the scoreboard, the scored knotted at 6-6.

LSU pulled off the win in overtime, although that victory was undone by a loss to Alabama in the BCS Championship Game two months later.

Still, the legacy of that game lives on. It was the tipping point that pushed college football from the BCS to a playoff system, with the rest of the nation sickened by the sight of two SEC teams battling it out in a rematch for the national title.

It has had a long-reaching impact in the NFL, too. From the rosters in the 2011 game, an incredible 50 players even were selected in future NFL drafts. Another 14 players who played in the 2011 showdown have signed as undrafted free agents, including this year’s crop of players, the final holdovers from the 2011 season.

For Alabama, eight defensive starters were drafted, as were seven offensive starters, putting them at 15 of their 22 starting players on both sides of the ball. For LSU, there were three offensive starters and nine defensive players taken in subsequent drafts, giving them 12 starters in all from the game drafted.

Between the two teams, 17 of the 22 defensive starters were drafted, and 10 total defensive players from the game were drafted in the first round — not a surprise when you think to how brutally physical the games between them were.

In total, there were 14 future first-round picks playing in that game, as well as 27 players selected in the first three rounds.
