The Associated Press’ policy to include nine teams in the preseason AP Top 25 college football poll who are not scheduled to play this season has sent ESPN’s Mike Greenberg into a tizzy.

“I tried very hard on my radio show yesterday to talk about this without laughing, and I couldn’t do it,” Greenburg said in a segment on Get Up with Greg McElroy and Booger McFarland.

As he introduced the topic with B-roll footage of Ohio State, which was No. 2, and Alabama at No. 3, Greenberg stepped away from the script and said, “I can’t even read this with a straight face!”

Greenberg even rhetorically asked McElroy that if no team goes unbeaten, should they put Ohio State in the Playoff. McElroy took it a step further and added Penn State.

“Greeny, we’ve never seen a team that was undefeated miss the Playoff,” McElroy said. “… In a world in which preseason polls are absolutely meaningless, this takes it to another level. This is the most meaningless poll in the history of college football.”
