Two NFC contenders have suffered crushing injuries to their No. 1 receivers recently.

Green Bay, the NFC favorite to reach the Super Bowl,  lost Pro Bowler Jordy Nelson for the season. That means Aaron Rodgers will rely more on Randall Cobb, the former Kentucky star. But it’s the biggest injury of the preseason thus far.

Carolina, the defending NFC South champion, suffered the same fate with excellent second-year player Kelvin Benjamin. That certainly hurts quarterback and former Auburn Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton. Now the Panthers have one of the weakest groups of receivers in the NFL.

So let’s look at a some other notable injuries suffered around the NFL, but limited to players from SEC schools. I am not counting guys such as Texans linebacker Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina) or Rams running back Todd Gurley (Georgia), both of whom are working their way back from injuries suffered in 2014.

Arian Foster, Houston RB: The former Tennessee standout suffered a groin injury very early in camp. That was referenced in the first episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” series with the Texans, as Houston head coach Bill O’Brien dropped an F-bomb when he heard the news. Foster underwent surgery and could will miss the first half of the season, although he reportedly is a bit ahead of schedule. Houston led the NFL in rushing attempts in 2014, when Foster rushed 260 times for 1,246 yards and eight touchdowns.

Johnny Manziel, Cleveland QB: The former Heisman winner from Texas A&M was a long shot to beat out Josh McCown, even though Johnny Football outplayed McCown in the team’s second preseason game. But now Manziel has no chance to do so as he is dealing with elbow soreness and won’t play the rest of the preseason. An MRI showed there was no structural damage. However, the Browns are trying to alter Manziel’s mechanics as his three-quarters throwing motion is likely the cause of the elbow troubles. Yet another setback for perhaps the most popular college football player in history.

Connor Shaw, Cleveland QB: The former South Carolina signal-caller was third on the Browns’ depth chart behind McCown and Manziel, but those guys haven’t exactly set the world on fire in their careers. There was a legitimate chance Shaw would have seen the field in 2015; he started the 2014 finale because of injuries to former Brown Brian Hoyer and Manziel. Alas, Shaw is likely out for the season following thumb surgery.

Senquez Golson, Pittsburgh DB: Golson led the SEC with 10 interceptions last season at Ole Miss and was a unanimous first-team All-American. The Steelers grabbed him in the second round and expected Golson to contribute immediately. Golson had impressed in offseason workouts but now could miss the season following shoulder surgery.

Corey Peters, Atlanta DT: Peters, from Kentucky, left the Arizona Cardinals this offseason to sign a three-year deal worth nearly $11 million with Atlanta and was expected to start at nose tackle. However, Peters tore his left Achilles tendon — despite not being touched on the play — and will miss the season. It’s an especially cruel blow because Peters tore the other Achilles in Week 16 of the 2013 season.

Maurkice Pouncey, Pittsburgh C: In the same preseason game in which the Packers lost Nelson for 2015, the Steelers saw their Pro Bowl center Pouncey, who played at Florida, suffer a left ankle injury when he was rolled up on by Green Bay safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix (Alabama). Pouncey had surgery on the ankle, but Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said it’s possible that Pouncey could return in the second half of the season depending on how he heals.

Matt Elam, Baltimore DB: Elam, another former Gator, will miss the season with a torn biceps. A consensus All-American at Florida, Elam was competing for the strong safety job with veteran Will Hill. Elam has largely disappointed in the NFL after being picked in the first round of the 2013 draft.

Alshon Jeffery, Chicago WR: The Bears already have lost 2015 first-round receiver Kevin White likely for the season. Jeffery, from South Carolina, is their No. 1 guy, but he has been hobbling around since Aug. 12 with a calf injury and likely won’t play at all this preseason. The Bears have been rather vague about his status and even if Jeffery is ready for Week 1, it seems clear he won’t be 100 percent.

Barkevious Mingo, Cleveland LB: Mingo was the No. 6 overall pick out of LSU by the Browns in 2013 but has been mostly a bust. He had just two sacks in 15 games last season. Mingo had arthroscopic surgery on a torn meniscus in his right knee earlier this month. He has battled injuries throughout his short career and seems doubtful for Week 1.

Dante Fowler Jr., Jacksonville DE: Fowler was the No. 3 overall pick out of Florida this spring but tore his ACL during Jacksonville’s first rookie minicamp session in early May to end his season. Fowler hadn’t even signed his contract yet (he has since). He was an early favorite for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
