SEC baseball is moving on to the last month of the regular season.

The final weekend series of April were held from Thursday-Sunday. When it comes to the SEC Tournament, there is a tight race for both the top and bottom spots.

The SEC still uses divisions in baseball, but the four teams near the top of the division standings are out to win a conference title.

Kentucky is down to a 1-game lead over Tennessee in the SEC East after the Wildcats dropped 2-of-3 at South Carolina. Tennessee swept Mizzou to pull closer to the division lead.

Arkansas and Texas A&M dropped series finales, maintaining the Razorbacks’ 1-game lead in the SEC West.

SEC Tournament spots

Only the top 12 teams will make the SEC Baseball Tournament. If the season ended today, Auburn and Missouri would miss out.

Currently, LSU and Ole Miss are taking the last two spots with 7-14 conference records. The Bayou Bengals and Rebels are 4 games above last-place Auburn, but just 1 game ahead of Mizzou.

With 3 weekends to go, a lot can change between now and tournament time.

NCAA Tournament bubble watch

The SEC’s College World Series contenders have established themselves. What about the teams just trying to make it into the NCAA Tournament?

Florida

The Gators entered the weekend as a D1Baseball’s projected 3-seed within the Tallahassee Regional hosted by Florida State. Baseball America considered UF one of the Last Four In, along with Utah, Ohio State and Texas before the Florida-Arkansas series.

Kevin O’Sullivan’s team went 1-2 at Arkansas. The Gators dropped a pair of 1-run decisions (2-1, 6-5) before winning the series finale 9-5 to avoid a sweep.

A series loss is never seen as a positive, but the Gators showed that they can hang with one of the top teams in the country and handed the Hogs a rare home loss.

Florida’s final stretch of Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia won’t make bubble life easy in Gainesville.

Ole Miss

The Rebels entered the weekend as a bubble team with work to do. D1Baseball listed Ole Miss fourth among its “First Four Out.” Baseball America went a step further, slotting Ole Miss in the “Next Four Out” grouping.

Mike Bianco’s squad didn’t help its stock, again coming up short of a series win. The Rebels avoided the sweep, but managed only a 9-8 victory over Alabama, dropping the series opener 12-0 in 7 innings via run rule and the finale 10-3.

Ole Miss will play Mississippi State in Pearl for a midweek meeting before traveling to Auburn. The trip to The Plains could help Ole Miss get back on track. The Tigers have not won an SEC series this season.

LSU

The defending national champions aren’t being mentioned as one of the 64 teams to make the tournament, but that won’t stop LSU from trying to make its way in with a strong finish.

Since the disastrous 3-12 start in conference play, the Bayou Bengals have gone 4-2 picking up a pair of series wins over Missouri and Auburn.

If LSU can make it 3 series wins in a row, the Tigers will turn some heads. Texas A&M is up next on the schedule, with Alabama and Ole Miss later in May.

Charlie Condon’s record-breaking weekend

Charlie Condon continued his incredible 2024 rewriting the Georgia record books.

On Saturday against Texas A&M, Condon became UGA’s single-season and career leader in homers with 28 for the season and 53 in his career. A redshirt sophomore, Condon has hit his 53 jacks over just 98 games.

Georgia dropped Friday’s opener to A&M before splitting a Saturday doubleheader to go 1-2 in the series. The Bulldogs will play Kennesaw State in midweek action before hosting Vanderbilt.
