Here are this week’s candidates to “boom” and to “bust” around the SEC (excluding games against FCS opponents):

BOOM

1. Marcus Murphy/Russell Hansbrough: The two-headed monster leading Missouri’s rushing attack combined to rush for 287 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Texas A&M last week, and they’ll be facing a Tennessee defense ranked 10th in the SEC against the run this year. To make matters worse for the Vols, they’ll be playing without star linebacker A.J. Johnson, who was suspended earlier this week. Missouri is going to try and control this game with its defense and its rushing attack, limiting the offense’s dependence on Maty Mauk.

2. Martrell Spaight: The Razorbacks’ star linebacker has been a playmaker in recent weeks, and he’ll be called upon again this week against a well-rested Ole Miss offense. The Rebels are far from the SEC’s most proficient rushing attack, meaning Spaight should be able to dominate against the run, in turn allowing him the freedom to play aggressively in coverage. Look for the Arkansas defense to play fast against the Rebels (minus Laquon Treadwell), riding the momentum it gained last week in a win over LSU.

3. Josh Robinson: Robinson only carried the ball 12 times in last week’s lost to Alabama, and he’ll be running with purpose this week against an overmatched Vanderbilt defense. Robinson is fresh and is unlikely to play the entire game, so he’s sure to make the most of the carries he gets on Saturday in Mississippi State’s home finale.

BUST

1. Bo Wallace: Ole Miss is going to lean on its senior quarterback heavily against a talented Arkansas defense on Saturday, and without Treadwell in the lineup his job will become much more challenging. Wallace is going to need to make plays in the passing game in a hostile road environment, and with his propensity for turning the ball over this could be a dangerous spot for him. Wallace is going to have a polarizing game on Saturday; he might torch the Hogs defense, or he might lead the Rebels to their demise.

2. Jalen Hurd: Tennessee’s freshman tailback has been sensational at times this year, but he’s facing a Missouri defense allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards per game in its last four SEC contests. The Vols offensive line has been suspect this year, and Missouri has arguably the best defensive line in the SEC. The Tigers are going to control the trenches on Saturday, making it difficult for Hurd to gain any traction in the run game.

3. Ralph Webb: Like Hurd, Vandy’s freshman tailback has been sensational this season but is also a suspect to struggle in Week 13. He’s facing a Mississippi State defense ranked third in the SEC against the run, and the Bulldogs are sure to play with fire following last week’s loss to Alabama. Vandy has struggled to run block all year, resulting in the SEC’s worst rushing offense, and Webb is likely to once again fall victim to a bad situation in Saturday night’s showdown.
