While freshmen certainly command their share of attention as the rookies on campus, it’s often the sophomores, with an extra year of seasoning, that can help make or break a team’s success.

Who are the SEC East’s top five super sophomores? Let’s take a look.

Terry Beckner, Jr., Missouri defensive tackle

Mizzou fans will be eager to see how Terry Beckner Jr.’s legs hold up in 2016. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound defensive tackle got off to a strong start in his freshman season, notching 27 tackles, including 8 for a loss and 3 sacks, in 10 games before he went down with a torn ACL and MCL in the BYU game.

The native of East St. Louis, Illinois, and former four-star recruit, looked good in spring practice and hopes to come back strong as Missouri looks to return to its former lofty SEC East heights this year.

Antonio Callaway, Florida wide receiver

Florida’s best receiver in 2015 was a freshman, who’s looking to improve upon a stellar rookie campaign. Antonio Callaway led the Gators with 678 receiving yards last year on 35 catches that included 4 touchdowns. The 5-foot-11, 198-pounder also proved his value as a deep threat, topping all receivers in the SEC with 19.4 yards per catch.

He notched three 100-yard receiving games against LSU, Georgia and Tennessee, catching the winning score against the Volunteers in an epic 28-27 victory.

Callway also returned two punts for touchdowns, with a stellar 15.5 yards per return on 28 total returns, earning First Team All-America honors from CBS Sports for that position.

Terry Godwin, Georgia wide receiver

Georgia’s super sophomore was less of a deep threat and more of a do-everything player. Receiver Terry Godwin gained 375 yards on 35 receptions with 2 TD receptions but was used some as a quarterback in the wildcat formation after stud running back Nick Chubb went down with a serious knee injury.

Godwin tossed a 44-yard TD pass to Malcolm Mitchell in that role against Penn State in the TaxSlayer Bowl while also catching a 17-yard touchdown pass to cap an exciting freshman campaign. With Mitchell gone to the pros, Godwin looks to be the Bulldogs’ top receiving threat this year. But don’t be surprised to see the former Callaway High School quarterback show off his arm again.

CeCe Jefferson, Florida defensive end

CeCe Jefferson showed the ability to stymie many a RB and QB in 2015. During his true freshman campaign, the 6-foot-1, 275-pound defensive end recorded 8.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage with 3.5 sacks and two quarterback hurries among his 29 tackles in 14 games.

The in-state Glen St. Mary native seemed to perform his best in close games, making five tackles and half a sack in a tight 14-9 win over Kentucky, and four solo tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack in the surprisingly close 20-14 overtime win over Florida Atlantic.

Trenton Thompson, Georgia defensive tackle

We’ll move to the interior of the defensive line for our final super sophomore. Georgia defensive tackle Trenton Thompson notched 25 tackles, 2.5 of them for a loss, in 12 games for the Bulldogs in 2015.

The 6-foot-4, 307-pounder from Albany was one of the most highly touted recruits, with 247Sports ranking Thompson the top prospect in the country, while ESPN rated him third. He’ll look to build on that exciting freshman season this year as the Bulldogs, already one of the top defenses in the SEC in 2015 by giving up 306 yards per game, look to challenge for the SEC East crown in 2016.
