SEC fans, media speculate ahead of conference’s ‘significant announcement’

It didn’t take long for speculation to run wild once SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey told reporters early Thursday afternoon that there would be a “significant announcement” related to the SEC later in the evening.
The reactions ranged from somewhat educated guesses, to full-fledged comedy. From a guess about a new television contract, trading CBS for ESPN, to making the Egg Bowl more toxic among the current coaches, who are too friendly for some. It ran the gamut.
Here is a sample of the reaction:
“Golden Flake is still the official chip of God’s Conference, thank you and good day” https://t.co/Ztymk683he

Breaking: The Egg Bowl rivalry has gone from too toxic to not nearly toxic enough. The SEC will consult with Mike Leach and Lane Kiffin to make sure they will no longer be friends. https://t.co/9Xrz6XKBEu

*light bulb goes off*
Is…..
Is the SEC going to announce that ESPN has bought out the remainder of the CBS tv contract, as has been rumored since last December?
COULD TODAY BE THE DAY WE RID OURSELVES OF CBS!?!??!

They only thing I can think of re: SEC “significant announcement” is a new television contract.

The fact that 500 reporters don’t seem to know what the SEC announcement is already makes me think maybe it’s basketball related.

This may or may not be related to the SEC “significant” announcement tonight: Today is Disney’s Investor Day and the SEC and Disney have been deep in talks about a TV deal. https://t.co/c58PiuWl6F

“Ok, can all the chatter. Listen up. After reviewing the tapes, we here at the SEC office want to make it perfectly clear that Tyler Simmons was onside. Have a blessed day.” https://t.co/crwC0dDJcm
