After a lackluster Saturday in the SEC, the power rankings changed quite a bit. Teams are starting to separate themselves from the competition.

Arkansas and Auburn were the SEC’s two biggest fallers this week. The Hogs suffered a really bad loss to Toledo, while Auburn nearly lost to FCS Jacksonville State.

Here are the Week 2 power rankings, as voted on by our staff:

Projected out of a bowl game

14. Vanderbilt Commodores (-)
13. South Carolina Gamecocks (-1)

Vanderbilt starts the season 0-2, fresh off a loss to SEC East favorite Georgia. Vanderbilt’s defense can keep them in games, but the Commodores’ offense hasn’t made progress at all…South Carolina is coming off a very disappointing loss to Kentucky, and the Cats have beaten the Gamecocks two straight years. Steve Spurrier never thought that was possible.

We need to see more

12. Florida Gators (-)
11. Kentucky Wildcats (+2)
10. Arkansas Razorbacks (-5)

Luckily, Florida had a tune up against ECU, otherwise we’d be talking about a 1-1 team. The Gators looked flat, sloppy and sluggish against the Pirates. Still, entering Week 3, the Gators haven’t solidified the starting quarterback…Kentucky jumped up two spots this week after beating South Carolina in Williams Brice Stadium. Yeah, it was ugly, but winning on the road is rarely pretty. Can Kentucky snap the losing streak to Florida this Saturday?…Arkansas was the biggest faller in this week’s poll. After the devastating loss to Toledo, the Hogs fell five spots to No. 10. Arkansas needs to get back to playing its power running game, or more losses will certainly come.

Middle of the pack

9. Missouri Tigers (-)
8. Mississippi State Bulldogs (+2)
7. Tennessee Volunteers (+1)

Missouri continues being Missouri, winning close games and winning ugly. The Tigers won’t impress many, but this team continues to find a way to get it done. Mizzou has to get healthy and soon…Despite losing to LSU, Mississippi State jumped up two spots this week. The Bulldogs had the Tigers on the ropes, but they missed the game-winning field goal as time expired. Boy, did Dak Prescott look sharp in the second half…Although Tennessee lost a heartbreaker to Oklahoma, they jumped up one spot this week. Bottom line: Tennessee’s young team has to learn to win big games. Butch Jones is 1-17 against ranked opponents during his career.

SEC West hunt

6. Auburn Tigers (-3)
5. LSU Tigers (+2)

Auburn fell three spots this week, which is much better than the 12 spots in the AP Poll. The Tigers look out of rhythm on offense, plagued by inconsistent quarterback play, and the defense is continually put in unfavorable positions. Despite the struggles, the Tigers are 2-0 to start the season, and nobody can write them off just yet…LSU had a nice win in a tough road environment Saturday night at Starkville. Obviously, Leonard Fournette was impressive, but quarterback Brandon Harris and the run defense were just as impressive. LSU and Auburn square off this week.

Electric Offenses

4. Texas A&M Aggies (+2)
3. Ole Miss Rebels (+1)

Texas A&M is off to a hot start at 2-0, and the Aggies are one of the most entertaining teams in college football. TAMU isn’t just an explosive offense; the defense has made tremendous strides through two games. You have to like the way TAMU has started the season…Ole Miss is putting up basketball-type numbers and leads the conference, averaging 74 points per game. Granted, UT-Martin and Fresno State didn’t exactly have the defense to stop the Rebels. How about Chad Kelly though? We’ll learn everything we need to know this week as Ole Miss travels to Tuscaloosa.

SEC favorites

2. Georgia Bulldogs (-)
1. Alabama Crimson Tide (-)

Georgia handily beat Vanderbilt, but there are still some concerns about the passing game. However, the running game and the defense could be the SEC’s best. Georgia is still the SEC East favorite through two weeks, but Tennessee and Mizzou will have something to say about it…Although Alabama is the SEC’s top team in this week’s power rankings, the inconsistencies at quarterback are a real concern, especially as the Crimson Tide’s offense eyes Ole Miss’ defense.
