A month ago, half the teams in the SEC were undecided on who would lead their offenses.

Now, a month later, many of the QB competitions are … frustratingly still undecided. The entire conference is lacking when it comes to starting quarterback experience, but that just means there’s opportunity for the next great SEC quarterback to take the reigns of his team.

With games less than a week away, here’s an update on the SEC quarterback competitions:

ALABAMA: JAKE COKER VS. COOPER BATEMAN VS. ALEC MORRIS VS. DAVID CORNWELL VS. BLAKE BARNETT

Status: TBD

Nick Saban doesn’t care about the constant questions from fans and reporters regarding who he’ll name as Alabama’s starting quarterback. He is in no rush, saying all three have performed well and that he wouldn’t want to “un-name” a starter after a bad performance.

The problem with that, though, is that the Crimson Tide open their season against a tough Wisconsin team at a neutral site, and that neither Coker nor Bateman nor Morris have separated themselves from each other since 2014 ended. That is something Saban should care about.

KENTUCKY: PATRICK TOWLES VS. DREW BARKER

Winner: Towles

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops was probably right in allowing a competition between Barker, a redshirt freshman, and Towles, last year’s starter. By splitting their first team reps since spring and giving the younger Barker a chance to overtake Towles, Stoops reduced the risk that the talented Barker would transfer after the season.

Stoops named Towles the starter last week, but the coach feels comfortable with Barker and may have a leash on the incumbent in 2015 if Kentucky’s midrange passing game doesn’t improve.

FLORIDA: TREON HARRIS VS. WILL GRIER

Status: Grier, 65 percent

Despite Harris starting Florida’s last six games in 2014, Grier’s projection as a multi-year started had the redshirt freshman pegged to overtake Harris in this competition. That hasn’t happened, though, at least yet. New Florida coach Jim McElwain said both will play in the Gators opener Sept. 5 against New Mexico State, and that their competition won’t be determined by any preset timetable.

McElwain has done this before with his quarterbacks to start a season, so we’ll have to wait for an answer on who will be the Gators QB of the future.

GEORGIA: BRICE RAMSEY VS. GREYSON LAMBERT

Status: Ramsey, 60 percent

Georgia coach Mark Richt cut this competition down to two this week, demoting Faton Bauta to a backup role during scrimmage to allow Ramsey and Lambert to handle first team reps. Ramsey is the Bulldogs backup from last season, but Lambert, a transfer from Virginia, has starting experience. Richt has indicated the two quarterbacks may share the starting job to begin the season, but that may be a nightmare for new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. The former St. Louis Rams play caller had enough of that during his time in the NFL.

LSU: ANTHONY JENNINGS VS. BRANDON HARRIS

Status: Harris, 85 percent

Harris, the LSU quarterback with the most upside, is certainly acting like the starter. While Les Miles hasn’t officially named a starter, he admitted last week that Harris has the lead on Jennings, the starter last season who was arrested in June and suspended by the team. Still, even if that hadn’t happened, Harris’ play during camp has warranted him landing the starting gig.

OLE MISS: CHAD KELLY VS. RYAN BUCHANAN VS. DEVANTE KINCADE

Status: Kelly, 60 percent

Coach Hugh Freeze said he has a “gut feeling” of who he wants to lead the Ole Miss offense, but won’t reveal who that is to the media. It seems apparent, though, that all three will get playing time against Tennessee-Martin. The Rebels should use that opportunity to make absolutely sure they’ve seen all of what Buchanan and Kincade can do, because this is Kelly’s job to lose. Despite his past misconduct, Kelly has the most talent of any Rebels quarterback. He is the one who can take Ole Miss to the next level.

TEXAS A&M: KYLE ALLEN VS. KYLER MURRAY

Winner: Allen

Coach Kevin Sumlin named Allen, the sophomore who helped rescue the Aggies season last year, the starter on Wednesday. This only became a competition because of how special of a talent that Murray is, but Sumlin clearly feels Texas A&M is better off sticking with experience for the team’s tough opener against Arizona State. Folks are beginning to realize that Allen is a talented QB too, with one writer asking if Allen could win the Heisman Trophy this season.

VANDERBILT: JOHNNY MCCRARY VS. WADE FREEBECK

Status: McCrary, 75 percent

Given how much the Commodores shuffled quarterbacks last season, it may be surprising that only two are listed for this competition. But Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason said early in camp that freshman Kyle Shurmur had a lot of work to do to catch up with McCrary and Freebeck, both of whom had starting experience in 2014. Vanderbilt hasn’t made the quarterbacks available for interviews during camp, but Mason will want to try and stick with one starter in 2015. Given McCrary’s productivity in the red zone during scrimmages, it appears that he’ll be that guy against Western Kentucky.
