SEC teams made easy workings out of their opponents in week 2, but we did see some lackluster performances.

Against the schedule, it’s nitpicking. But which teams could have played better in week 2?

South Carolina

The Gamecocks were improved, but still showed some vulnerabilities on the offensive and defensive lines. Steve Spurrier relied on the run game to beat South Carolina, his 200th win as a head coach in the SEC. Quarterback Dylan Thompson got off to a slow start and didn’t look very comfortable in the first half. Still, it was a start of Carolina, who now faces a must-win against Georgia on Saturday.

Mississippi State

The Bulldog defense struggled against UAB, allowing 34 points on three touchdowns of longer than 75 yards. Kickers Westin Graves and Evan Sobiesk missed back-to-back extra points in the first half in a game in which neither kicker distinguished himself from the other. On the offensive side of the ball, Heisman dark horse completed just 48 percent of his passes, which will not beat an SEC West team. It was good enough to beat the Blazers, though.

Tennessee

It was a nice win, but at best, the Vols are the fourth best team in the East. The defense gave up some big plays to Arkansas State quarterback Fredi Knighten. Special teams continue to be a problem area for position coach Mark Elder, who has stated publicly that the kicking competition is still open. It’s nice to Rocky Top at 2-0, but they face a stiff road test now as they head to Norman to face the Oklahoma Sooners who trounced Tulsa on Saturday.
