Uniform update: Sweet alternates define Week 9’s big wins across college football
Ohio State has donned several Nike Pro Combat and System of Dress alternate uniform combinations over the last few seasons, but Saturday’s ‘Rivalry’ update during Penn State’s white-out in Happy Valley was among the cleanest looks. An all-black alternate is rumored later this season.
For the first time ever, Illinois went without orange in its alternate look on gameday, sporting an all-gray ‘Gray Ghost’ combination with navy and white accents during an upset win over Minnesota. Intended to honor ‘Galloping Ghost’ Red Grange, we’ll likely see these again after the Fighting Illini’s first Big Ten win of the season.
“It was electric. That’s what it’s supposed to be. That’s what locker rooms are supposed to be like,” Illinois coach Tim Beckman said about the pre-game uniform vibe. “I don’t think we’ll ever take the gray off.”
While you were sleeping, Utah went monochromatic in all-black to combat USC’s chrome helmets (for a second straight game) out West and it worked for the Utes. Utah’s matte helmets were the best part, complete with a sweet chrome and red primary logo.
Western Michigan brought out a gold alternate jersey with matte black helmets against Ohio, sporting criss-crossed oars across shoulder panels. Strange.

After previously unveiling an orange chrome lid with a secondary Pistol Pete logo, Oklahoma State added a different decal to its helmets against West Virginia, a throwback ‘Bronc Rider’ graphic. The Cowboys have worn more than 10 different helmets over the last four seasons.

In the SEC, Tennessee chose its creamsicle all-orange set during a loss to Alabama while Ole Miss went with its alternate red jersey in Death Valley.
