Here are five takeaways from South Carolina’s 23-20 win in overtime.

1. South Carolina fought against difficult odds. South Carolina found itself down 17-10 with under a minute remaining. The Gamecocks answered with a blocked punt that set up the ensuing possession on Florida’s 30-yard line. Mike Davis capped off the drive with a touchdown just before the end of regulation. South Carolina kept momentum in overtime and held the Gators to a field goal before Dylan Thompson provided the game-winning touchdown.

2. The defense had its best performance against an SEC opponent. The Gamecocks held Florida to 20 points, the lowest total for an SEC opponent this season. The Gators were held scores in the fourth quarter and managed 10 points from the third quarter on. South Carolina held Florida to 278 yards of total offense after recording over 400 in back-to-back weeks.

3. Pharoh Cooper saw less targets late into game. Cooper started out strong, but failed to provide an offensive spark late in Saturday’s game. The sophomore caught one pass in the second half for no gain before adding a 5-yard reception in overtime. Cooper’s performance was disappointing considering his historic game against Tennessee two weeks ago. Without their best receiver’s production, the Gamecocks offense looked far less impressive than in recent weeks.

4. Still need to take advantage of opportunities. South Carolina had several opportunities to take the lead before its late-game heroics. The Gamecocks offense struggled to capitalize on field position and cap off possessions with scoring drives. This has plagued South Carolina all season, especially with the Gamecocks ahead.

5. Gamecocks remain in bowl contention. South Carolina took a step forward in securing bowl eligibility. With five wins, the Gamecocks are one win away from making their seventh consecutive bowl appearance. Though South Carolina has failed to live up to high preseason expectations, it can still salvage the season with two winnable games and a postseason birth.
