South Carolina doesn’t have a football coach yet, despite some reports to the contrary.

Reports circulated on Friday that Will Muschamp was about to be hired as the Gamecocks’ next coach. But no announcement has been made as of 5:30 p.m. ET on Friday. And now it appears those reports could be false, because South Carolina is reportedly still interviewing candidates for the job.

According to Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated, the Gamecocks are interviewing Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano and South Florida head coach Willie Taggart today.

And Muschamp is still the defensive coordinator at Auburn.

Muschamp has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave Auburn after the SEC Championship Game without having to pay the school a buyout. So if South Carolina decides it wants Muschamp, it likely won’t be able to hire him until Sunday.

Shawn Elliott, South Carolina’s interim head coach, interviewed for the job on Wednesday, while Muschamp and Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley had interviews on Thursday.

South Carolina has been looking for a new coach since Steve Spurrier resigned on Oct. 12 after more than 10 years at the school. Athletic director Ray Tanner has said he’d like to have a new coach by next weekend.

University president Harris Pastides said he believes the Gamecocks are close to having a new coach.

“I think (Tanner) is in the very, very final stage,” Pastides told TheBigSpur.com. “I think he knows, and I think I’m going to get a call from him very soon, and I’ll find out who that person is.”
