Dawn Staley joined the set of College GameDay on Sunday morning to talk about her No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks prior to tipoff against Georgia.

South Carolina is in the midst of another dominant season despite losing all 5 starters from last year’s Final Four team. While on GameDay, Staley was asked about rebuilding the Gamecocks’ rotation this offseason. Staley said things were so bad in the summer that she considered “early retirement” as a possibility.

“Considering what it looked like in June … early retirement,” Staley said. “Seriously, I was considering it. Seriously … It’s called meeting not only just individual players but our team where they were. And they really weren’t in a good place. We lacked leadership. We lacked a lot of things. We lacked conditioning. We lacked a discipline. But once you start forming your habits, they picked up on them fairly quickly. For the returners, they understood. But they were in a new situation themselves because they were the ones that are the example-setters now.

“And sometimes that takes you back because you have to change how you approach things because you’re the one that people are looking at. And I thought it took a little longer than we wanted. But if I knew it was going to turn out like this, I probably wouldn’t have been as mad.”

Staley, 53, is in the midst of building one of the best coaching résumés in recent women’s college basketball history. She has already led the Gamecocks to 2 national championships as well as 5 trips to the Final Four.

South Carolina has reached the Final Four in each of the past 3 seasons and will be favored to make it 4 in a row this spring. The Gamecocks enter Sunday’s game against Georgia with a perfect 24-0 record.

Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
