South Carolina landed a big signature during the early signing period in the previous recruiting cycle from four-star, in-state prospect Dakereon Joyner. However, according to one recruiting analyst, the Gamecocks’ highest-rated signee in 2018 should consider flipping to another position to maximize his potential.

According to 247Sports Composite Rankings, Joyner rated as the No. 9 dual-threat quarterback in the nation for the 2018 recruiting cycle; while ESPN rated the South Carolina native as a four-star athlete. There appears to be a reason for that discrepancy as ESPN college football analyst Tom Luginbill believes Joyner’s future is at another position.

During a recent appearance on the Rich Taylor Show, Luginbill offered up his opinion that Joyner would be wise to make the move to receiver. The ESPN analyst even compared Joyner to all-time Florida playmaker Percey Harvin:

It’s an interesting argument as Jake Bentley is already entrenched as South Carolina’s starting quarterback and has already expressed his desire to return for his senior season in 2019. Add in the fact that the Gamecocks hold a commit from elite 2019 quarterback prospect Ryan Hilinski and the QB room in Columbia could be pretty crowded in the near future.

If Joyner has legitimate NFL aspirations, a move to another position could potentially give him a head start on learning the position Luginbill seems to think gives him the best chance at doing so. Considering Will Muschamp has announced Mike Scarnecchia as the team’s backup for 2018, it appears there is little chance Joyner sees the field for the Gamecocks for any meaningful snaps at quarterback this season.

Do you think Joyner has what it takes to be a quarterback in the SEC?
