Despite having a nice Early Signing Day on Wednesday, South Carolina did have a couple recruits that got away, one in particular was Jaishawn Barham out of Baltimore.

Barham had publicly announced he was going to be a Gamecock on Saturday, but by Wednesday however, he had signed with Maryland and many wondered why.

Well, Barham’s high school coach Messay Hailemariam, offered this explanation, according to Sports Talk South Carolina about why the change of heart.

“The family and the kid are the ultimate decision makers,” he said. “That’s the best thing I can say to people. I tell my guys all the time, it’s a choice they make with their families. We try to advise them the best we can on how to do it. It’s hard to advise kids on how to do it when coaches, I mean, Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma just up and left, and left my kid (DE Derrick Moore) that was committed to him for 6 months. To me, it’s hard for me to become judgmental on what people and kids can do. This game has changed. These last 2 weeks have been one of the worst scenarios I’ve ever seen, and some of the best.”

Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer suggested earlier this week that this was coming and wasn’t surprised by the flip.
