Fans may overlook the addition of a punter but when that punter ranks as the nation’s No. 2 prospect at the position, the value he could bring to a program can’t be overlooked.

That’s what the Gamecocks are getting in Illinois native Kai Kroeger, who announced his commitment to Will Muschamp’s South Carolina program on Tuesday. According to Kohl’s Kicking website, South Carolina’s latest commit is ranked as a five-star prospect and the nation’s No. 2 punter for the 2020 recruiting cycle.

Kroeger announced his commitment to South Carolina with the following statement:

“I want to thank God for blessing me with the opportunity to play the game that I love and the ability to compete with the best. I would like to thank my parents for the endless support they give me. From shagging balls during a training, to going to numerous visits with me, they have always been there for me and kept me positive through everything. I want to thank the excellent coaches that have trained me: Joe Gardener, Jamie Kohl, Filip Filipovic, Kerry Neal and Elias Karras. They each have pushed me, supported me, and shared their wisdom and experience to make me a better player and person. I would like to thank my high school football teammates and coaches, without their enthusiasm and dedication to the team, I would not be in this position. I also want to thank Sam Volpe for always training with me and being the best long snapper a punter could want.

“Finally, a huge thank you to Coach Hutzler and Coach Muschamp for believing in me and blessing me with the opportunity to play the game I love with their amazing program. With that being said, I am beyond grateful to announce that I am COMMITTED to the University of South Carolina!”
